Shelby County & The Spanish-American War

Enlistment Roll       Enlistment roll opened April 26, 1898, at the office of John F. Wilson in Sidney, Ohio.  The first call for troops only took seventy-two officers and men of the State Militia, which did not meet with the U.S. Regulations of 106 men.  Company L, Third Infantry, O.N.G., answered the first call for troops.  The company was mobilized April 26, 1898 at Camp Bushnell in Columbus, Ohio and was mustered into United States service on May 10, 1898.  Upon the second, and last call, the company was made up of one hundred and nine men.  At their time of service, all of the men  were residents of Shelby County.
    According to the History of Shelby County by Hitchcock, the 3rd reg. was assigned to the Fifth Army Corps and was sent to Tampa, Florida.  They were ordered to prepare to embark transports to Cuba, but soon found out that they would not be going because there was not enough room.  Because of this, the regiment spent their six months' service in camp at De Sota park near Tampa at Fernandino, FL and Huntsville, AL.

  Due to unsanitary conditions of the camp at Tampa,  many men from Company L became seriously ill and were sent home on sick furlough.  Remarkably, there were no deaths in the company during the six months' service.  Company L was mustered out at Columbus in October.  At the reception given in the armory on one of the evenings after their return, Melvin Williams, on behalf of the men, presented Lieutenant-Colonol W.T. Amos with a beautiful sword. top
