McCorkle, 84, of R.R. 6, Sidney, State Route 47, longtime Shelby County school superintendent, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday in a Galveston, Tex., Hospital. Born in Cynthian township, Shelby County, in 1866, he was a son of Cyrus and Mary Yonker McCorkle. Survivors are his wife, the former Mary Young, a son, Dr. Charles McCorkle Jr. of Galveston, four grandchildren and a brother, Walker McCorkle of Riverside, Calif. Dr. McCorkle belonged to the Trinity Church of the Brethren, the Sidney Rotary Club and the Sidney Masonic Lodge. He attended Oran elementary school and Manchester College, North Manchester, Ind., before enrolling at Ohio University where he received his bachelor degree in 1909. He received masters degrees from Clark University, Worcester, Mass., in 1915 and from Harvard University in 1917 and returned to Ohio University for a doctorate. In the 1920's he attended Cleveland law School where he received his degree of law in 1929. Before coming to Shelby County as superintendent, he had been principal of city schools including Ironton and Kenmore, near Akron for 17 years. He also taught summer school classes at Wooster College, Ohio. He became superintendent locally in April of 1934 and retired at the end of 1957 and he and his wife lived at their farm home until recently when they went to Galveston. Completion of the funeral arrangements is awaiting the arrival of the son and other relatives. Masonic lodge members will hold services at 6:45 p.m. Wednsesday at the Cromes and Sons Funeral Home.
