MARSHALL Had Operated Pioneer Business After His Death Residents of Newport and community paused this week before the memory of a woman whose name long had been linked with the life and activities of that once thriving village and of a wide surrounding area of Shelby County. Associated with her husband for many years in operating probably the oldest business of the village, and after his death becoming its active manager, Mrs. Elizabeth MARSHALL, the widow of F.J. MARSHALL, was known to hundreds of residents of surrounding counties. The aged woman, who was in her 70th year, succumbed in the Wilson Memorial hospital at Sidney from the effects of a stroke, at 9:30 p.m. last Thursday. She had suffered the stroke 11 days before, lapsing into unconciousness from which she failed to emerge. Eighty-one years ago the building which to this day houses the MARSHALL House was built by the father of F.J. MARSHALL, along what is now known as State Route 66, and along the Miami and Erie canal, which in that year, 1860, was a thriving water shipping route. F.J. MARSHALL became associated with his father in business in his boyhood, and after his father’s death, and his marriage, continued the hostelry with his wife. After his death Mrs. MARSHALL continued in the business, assisted by her sons, until the time of her passing. Elizabeth (MONNIER) MARSHALL was born in Loramie Township, Shelby County, near the village of Russia, the daughter of the late George and Julia MONNIER, on April 7, 1872. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, and on October 24, 1893 was married to Mr. MARSHALL, the wedding mass having been read in the St. Remy Catholic Church at Russia. The young couple then established their residence in the hotel at Newport, and during their life there six sons were born into the household. Their entire married life was spent at Newport, with the exception of a short while during which they resided at Dayton. F.J. MARSHALL as a young man became a leading figure in political activities of the community and Shelby county. He bacame a member of the board of directors of the Loramie Banking Co. of Ft. Loramie, and for a number of years was president of the institution. Failing health caused Mr. MARSHALL to curtail many of his activities. He bagan ailing in the year 1928, and his death occurred, after a long and disturbing illness, at the PIqua Memorial hospital, on Aug. 21, 1934.
