His parents came from England. They came to Ohio in 1802 before it became a State and settled in Greene county near Bellbrook. Here he grew to manhood. In the year 1821 he came to this county, and on April 12 of the same year was married to Miss HANNAH CLARK, also of this county, who lived but 13 months leaving no children. In 1824 he married SUSAN T. DORSEY, with whom he had two children, both died. She died in 1828. In 1835 he married Miss MARY RAINES, with whom there were nine children; three sons and six daughters. One of the sons died in the service during the rebellion. Five daughters and one son survive him. The third wife died March 4, 1848. In 1849 he married Miss CATHERINE BRENNER, of Montgomery county, with whom he lived until November, 1870, when she died. In 1874 he married his fifth wife, Mrs. NANCY McCLELLAND, widow of JAMES McCLELLAND and daughter of FREDERICK CHRISTMAN, who survives him. Mr. HUGHES made his first settlement in Shelby County with his first wife in 1821, and after her death was absent from the county until 1850, after his marriage with the third wife he settled in Loramie township and raised his family there. He was noted for integrity and uprightness of character, and his utter contempt of anything savoring of dishonesty. He was a kind husband and father, and always generous to the needy. In his death one of the oldest landmarks in the county has been obliterated. He was a member of the Oran Christian church since 1853.
