EVENING, DIES OF INJURIES SUN. SHERIFF IS SEEKING CLUE TO MOTORIST Accident Happens Near Bee Hive Church About 6 P.M. Saturday 78 Year Old Man Had Just left House of Grover Rich After Visit Sheriff Cliff Gearhart and the members of the State Highway patrol are completely at sea seeking a clue to the hit-skip motorist who knocked down Freeman Coverstone, 78, on state route no. 47, nine miles northeast of Sidney, about 6 o'clock Saturday night, inflicting injuries that resulted in his death early Sunday morning at the Wilson Memorial hospital. The accident occurred near the Bee Hive church while Coverstone was walking along the highway. Coverstone had just left the home of Grover Rich near by and Mrs. Rich heard the crash as he was hit by the automobile and went to the injured man's assistance as quickly as possible. The automobile that struck him had completely disappeared and no description was secured. Sheriff Gearhart, of Sidney, and State Patrolman Curry, of Bellefontaine, were notified and went to the scene to make an investigation but could secure no clue as to who had struck the injured man. The only information secured was that the autoist was headed toward the east. Covestone was later brought to the Wilson Memorial hospital in the Kerr Mortuary ambulances. He passed away several hours after he arrived at the hospital. An examination at the hospital revealed that Coverstone had been injured internally, and died during a hemorrhage. He also suffered bad injuries on the head and a compound fracture of the left leg. The deceased was 78 years of age and is survived by four sons, Oscar Coverstone of Pemberton; Chester and Elza Coverstone, of Sidney and Bert Coverstone of near Maplewood. His wife and one daughter are deceased. For the past several years he had been living a retired life near the Bee Hive church just off the state route No. 47. The remains were taken to the home of Bert Coverstone, one fourth mile from the Bee Hive church, Monday morning. Funeral rites arranged for Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the Bee Hive Church in charge of Rev. Charles Shie. Burial at Quincy. (Next article follows below) Bellfontaine Daily Examiner December 21, 1936 Hit-Skip Victim Is In Sidney Hospital Freeman Coverstone, 77, was knocked down by an automobile near Logansville With only meager clues to work on, the State Highway Patrol Monday was seeking the whereabouts of a hit-skip motorist whose auto struck and injured Freeman Covestone, aged 77 years, a Shelby County resident, who resides near the Logan county line. The aged man suffered a fractured leg and body bruises about 6 P.M. while walking along State route 47, west of Logansville, in front of the home of Mr. and Mrs.Grover Rich where he had called. Shortly after he had departed from their home Mr. Coverstone was found by Mr. Rich lying along the north berm of the highway, having been struck by the eastbound machine. The aged man was walking on the north side of the road at the time, the State Highway Patrol office here stated Monday. There apparently were no witnesses to the accident and only meager clues were furnished. Coverstone was removed to the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney.
