In October 1881, A.S.
Robbins placed the following ad in the VALLEY SENTINEL, local newspaper
at that time.
“Sidney Hotel:
I will say to the public and farmers generally that I have leased the rooms
above the stores of DeWeese and Atkinson’s and having thoroughly refitted
and supplied them with new and elegant furniture, I am now ready for the
accommodation of the traveling public, a share of whose patronage is respectfully
solicited. – A.S. Robbins”
Another mention of the Sidney Hotel is in December 1887, when MARTIN CHAMBERS, 72 years, of Sidney was delivering a basket of parsnips and grated horseradish to the cook at the Sidney House. He had barely passed the basket to her when he sank to his knees, fell forward and died without a struggle. Mr. Chambers had been a resident of Sidney for many years.
Another newspaper item, of January 1885, gave the information concerning an attempted robbery at the Sidney House. Thieves broke in through the cellar but were not successful in getting anything of value.
The exact location of this hotel has not been determined.
